The Four Limits Worth Knowing First

Every benefit described above is real. Each is also bounded, and the boundaries matter more than the benefits when deciding whether to apply.

It does not relocate your tax residence. Vanuatu imposes no personal income tax, no capital gains tax and no inheritance tax — on people who are tax resident there. Nearly every country taxes according to residence rather than nationality, so holding the passport while continuing to live and work where you always have changes nothing about what you owe. It does not shield accounts from reporting. Vanuatu joined the automatic exchange of financial account information in 2018 and its institutions report under the Common Reporting Standard. A second nationality determines which authority receives a report, not whether one exists.

It does not confer residence anywhere else. Citizenship of Vanuatu gives the right to live in Vanuatu. It creates no entitlement to live, work or study in any other country and no preferential route to a visa for one.
